East Texas Support for Single Parents: A hope for a better future.

Welcome!

This is a non-profit website established to provide support for single parents in need. The resources available on this webpage will help struggling parents rebuild and redirect their lives for their sake and for the sake of their children. Sometimes all we need is a starting point, and this website can be a step in the right direction for building a successful future. So now that you're here, what is the first step? Developing a plan. So read on to find out how to get started.

Our Mission

This website was created to support an advocacy project for children. The project began as a school assignment, and the reason behind the topic I chose is a personal one. I recently found myself in a financial predicament as a result of divorce. I have two children, and at the time of my separation, I was trying to finish college. All of my resources were snatched out from under me, and I did not know where to turn. All that stood between a full-time minimum wage job and a successful career was one semester. There was no way I could work, take 17 hours, and raise two children on my own, all at the same time. I felt alone and abandoned. I wanted to reach out to single parents and their children to provide a source of stability during a state of fear and confusion. I found that several of my classmates wanted to do the exact same thing. This scenario hit home for them, as well. They joined my project and together we created this website. We hope that this can be a source of encouragement and hope for anyone wanting to rebuild or change their life, as well as for single parents.

Suggestions:

  • Make a list of what you need. (job, home, food, child care,   college, etc.)

  • Find your county on this website, or select the link under Resources and Contact Information for All Counties in Texas (Texas Resources for Needy Families).  There will be a list of services available for you to contact. You can also dial 2-1-1 anywhere in Texas and they will provide you with the same information for your area.

  • Think about college!  There are many schools in Texas that offer degrees online, so you can take classes at home!

  • Check out the universities and junior colleges on this site.  There are links to the college as well as to their online degree programs.  But these schools are not the only choices.  Most all colleges offer online courses, even if they do not offer a complete online degree plan.

  • Fill out a FAFSA- Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  There is a link on this website that takes you directly to the FAFSA home page.  This will help pay for college, and most of the time there are funds left over to help support you through the semester.  The funds for college will come as grants (you do NOT pay back) and student loans (you WILL pay back).  You will need your filed income tax information to complete this step.  But remember, IT'S FREE!  So what have you got to lose?

  • Quick job fix:  Becoming a certified paraprofessional.  Our schools need teacher's assistants, and although this job may not pay a whole lot, it comes with full benefits.  Plus you have the same schedule as your children.  Panola College offers a short training course online for only $250.

  • Participate in our BLOG!  You can find support from peers and offer encouragement to others.
